Chula Vista Real Estate
Chula Vista is the largest of the San Diego suburbs. It is the second
largest city in San Diego County as well as the 21st largest in the
state of
California. Chula Vista is located in the South Bay area of San Diego
County, just south of National City and north of the Mexico border. It
is
home to more than 165,000 residents and is one of the fastest growing
cities
in the county.
Chula Vista means "beautiful view" in Spanish. The town was first laid
out
in 1887 during the state's first real estate boom. New residents came
from
all over the U.S. as well as England and Canada. The main industry of
the
town was citrus crops and at one time the city was known as the "Lemon
Capital of the Nation." Chula Vista incorporated in 1911.
Today, the lemon groves have been replaced by master-planned
communities and
housing developments. The city offers a mix of light industry and
aerospace. The area features several major shopping areas with the
newest
one having opened in the Otay Lakes area of the city. Plaza Bonita is
the
area's oldest mall and hosts several anchor stores such as Macy's & JC
Penney. The area malls serve shoppers from all over South Bay and
Tijuana
as well.
In 1996 the Eastlake Development Company introduced its first
master-planned
community to the city of Chula Vista. The Eastlake development is on
of
the largest urban developments in California and is currently about
two-thirds built. Eastlake is also developing the Eastlake Business
Center
which will be home to several corporations, the Eastlake Design Center
which
will serve as a "one stop" shopping center for all home design goods
and
services and a major retail center which features Target and Lowe's.
Near downtown on the waterfront there is a 552 berth marina that can
accommodate a wide variety of boats. On the far eastern side of the
city,
the ARCO US Olympic Training Center is the largest of three such
centers in
the country. It is built on land that was donated by the Eastlake
Development Company. Athletes are able to train year round for a
variety of
sports such as soccer, track and field, rowing, cycling and hockey.
The south side of the city is home to the Coors Amphitheater, a major
entertainment venue that is visited by concert-goers from all over the
county. Nearby, Knott's Soak City Water Park operates seasonally and
offers
great outdoor fun for families and kids of all ages.
