Tecolote Canyon was first settled by the Kumeyaay Indians, who named it for the owls who made it their home. In the late 1800's the canyon was farmed and, about seventy years later, it supported herds of cattle. Overcoming a move to turn it into a landfill, the canyon was dedicated as a Nature Park in 1978.
The Park now has an 18 hole golf course, a Nature Center, trails for walking (with your leashed dog), jogging and mountain biking. Birders and those who are interested in the canyon vegetation find much to enjoy. Foxes, coyotes, rabbits, snakes, lizards and even the occasional (seasonal) mountain lion make the canyon their home, along with a wide variety of birds.
One of the most conveniently located areas of San Diego, Clairemont is within easy reach of downtown, Little Italy, Balboa Park, Old Town, Seaport Village, The Maritime Museum with its historic sailing ships, La Jolla, the beaches, the new PetCo Ballpark, Qualcomm Stadium, and the historic Gaslamp Quarter, with its many shops, galleries and restaurants.
There is a variety of housing available in the area, including condominiums and single-family detached homes. The most desirable homes have canyon views, actually sit at the edge of a canyon and/or have views of the bay and ocean. Neighborhood shopping is available, including Clairemont Town Square, with a variety of shops and restaurants. There are numerous public and private elementary, middle and high schools in the area. Mesa College, the University of San Diego, and the University of California San Diego are within easy reach.
