Del Mar Real Estate
Just north of La Jolla and south of Solana Beach with Interstate 5 to the east, and bound by the ocean on the west, the beautiful small city of Del Mar ("of the sea" in Spanish) embraces approximately two and one-half miles of beach and climbs up the lush green hills.
Del Mar was brought into existence by an employee of the Southern California Railroad and his wife (who named Del Mar) in 1882, when the new rail route from San Diego to San Bernardino began service.
The area was so spectacularly beautiful and had such near-perfect weather that it began attracting people to a fashionable new resort, the Casa Del Mar, which was built in 1883. Seven years after its successful debut, bankruptcy ensued, followed by a flood and a fire, and it closed.
In 1910, the Stratford Inn opened on the bluffs above the ocean, and soon it was filled with the "Hollywood Crowd", who brought money and excitement to Del Mar.
With the coming of electricity in the 1920's, the area really took off. New residents began moving into the new areas being developed, and businesses to accommodate their needs opened.
Up until 1959, Del Mar was a part of the city of San Diego. After much debate among the residents, Del Mar incorporated, and the two square miles on the ocean became a separate city. The population today is approximately 4,500.
After a wonderful "day at the beach" spent sunning, swimming or surfing, one can stroll along the main street, Camino Del Mar, and enjoy shopping in boutiques, galleries and a variety of shops. Great food is also an integral part of the Del Mar experience, and an assortment of restaurants and cuisines is available.
During the summer, the San Diego Fair is a huge attraction, after which the thoroughbred racing season at the famous Del Mar Racetrack begins. On Opening Day, the ladies wear spectacular and often huge hats, which add to the festivities.
Housing includes apartments, condominiums, although they are greatly outnumbered by detached single-family homes, many of which have views of the ocean and/or lagoons. As it is one of the most desirable places to live on the west coast and there is virtually no land available for new construction, real estate can be quite costly
after all, it is a bit of Paradise.
