Little Italy
Located just northwest of downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter and roughly bound by Front Street and Interstate 5 on the east, Pacific Highway on the west, Ash Street on the South and Laurel Street on the north, is the Little Italy neighborhood of San Diego.
It was settled in the l900's by fishermen from Italy and Portugal who began the very successful fishing industry in San Diego . While tuna was the staple catch, many other varieties were also caught and sold to both commercial and individual customers. They and their families created a true "neighborhood". They knew, aided, socialized with, married and gave support to each other in the all too frequent tragedy of losing a loved one who was working on one of the fishing boats. There is a memorial to these brave men on Shelter Island , facing the bay and the ocean beyond.
Today's Little Italy is a thriving community. It is a great place to live, and a number of new condo buildings, over which the Little Italy Board has architectural control, are bringing new residents to the area. India Street is the "main drag", with a variety of businesses, restaurants and shops featuring Italian home furnishings and decor. One can grab a bite at an Italian bakery, deli, coffee shop, wine bar or café, many of which have outdoor seating. There are also a number of restaurants offering wonderful food, including Italian (of course!), Japanese, Argentinean and, coming soon, Chinese. There's even a British Pub and a restaurant serving Mexican, Pacific Coast and Native American influenced cuisine! To satisfy your sweet tooth, Extraordinary Desserts, which is very well-named, is nearby.
Little Italy offers convenient and sophisticated neighborhood living, primarily in new or recently built condominiums, lofts and townhouses, many of which have beautiful views of San Diego Bay and the city.
