Imperial Beach Real Estate
Imperial Beach's claim to fame is that it is the most southwesterly
community in the country. It is situated approximately 20 miles south
of
downtown San Diego, just north of the Mexico border and the city of
Tijuana.
The town originally began as a beach vacation spot for residents of the
Imperial Valley, which is where the town's name originated.
The long fishing pier that the area is known for has been replaced
several
times over the years. It was last rebuilt in 1988. The original pier
housed a machine that generated electricity from the motion of the
waves.
The "Edwards Wave Motor" as it was dubbed proved not very successful
and was
dismantled.
"IB" as it is referred to by the locals boasts some of the best sand in
the
country. The Imperial Beach annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition is
a
major community event that draws contestants from all over the U.S.
The
results of the contestant's efforts are nothing short of architectural
marvels.
The area features a State Park and two wildlife sanctuaries. Border Field State Park, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Sanctuary and The
Tijuana
Slough National Wildlife Refuge provide opportunities for recreation.
In 1956 Imperial Beach was the tenth city in San Diego to be
incorporated.
