Julian Real Estate
The entire town of Julian is a registered historical District which
features
original store fronts, tours of gold mines, an old fashioned soda
fountain
and the oldest operating hotel in Southern California.
Located only 50 miles to the northeast of San Diego, Julian is at an
altitude which gets cold enough to have snow. It is a favorite
destination
in the wintertime for visitors who want to throw snowballs and have the
chance to build a California snowman. The fall brings the apple
harvest,
which is made into 10,000 luscious Julian apple pies. The quaint
village
offers the ambiance of bygone days and features unique gift and antique
shops.
In 1870 the town was named Julian by 2 ex-confederate soldiers who left
their native Georgia to join in the California Gold Rush. Gold was
first
discovered in Coleman Creek in the year of 1869. After a short 10
years the
mines had yielded nearly $5 million in gold. The town was called home
by
over 300 miners.
Julian was able to survive after the Gold rush passed due largely to
the
town's proximity to the city of San Diego. The first apple trees were
introduced in the early 1870 and have thrived in the rich soil ever
since.
By the early part of the 20th century, Julian apples were winning
accolades
at World's Fairs. Albert Robinson, a former slave, started the Julian
Hotel
with his wife in 1897. Recently, the hotel was restored to its
original
glory and splendor. It is now listed on the National Register of
Historic
Places. The town is also a State of California "Point of Historical
Interest."
The homes in Julian tend to be single-family residences, many with
larger
lots.
Julian offers year-round activities for visitors in all four seasons.
