La Jolla Real Estate
Located just south of Del Mar and the Torrey Pines Reserve, just north of Pacific Beach and just west of Interstate 5 is one of the best-known and most desirable areas in Southern California, La Jolla (pronounced, "La Hoya").
You will feel as if you are on the Cote d'Azur as you drive down the hill towards the ocean and into La Jolla. The climate, the look and the atmosphere are very Mediterranean. The foliage, including palm trees, bougainvilleas and hibiscus, is lush and covers Mt. Soledad and the surrounding hills that rise above the coast and beaches.
While La Jolla is actually within the City of San Diego, it has very much its own identity. Various neighborhoods make up La Jolla, including The Village, La Jolla Shores, The Beach Barber Tract, WindAndSea and Bird Rock, which add character and charm to the area.
Casual sophistication best describes the "Village" area of La Jolla, with its many shops, galleries, ocean-view restaurants and outdoor cafes. The historic and architecturally significant La Valencia Hotel enhances Prospect Street, just above the ocean. One can walk a block down from the shopping areas to a beautiful ocean-front park which fronts a large underwater preserve, where one can relax on a bench or take a short walk south to see the seals basking on Seal Rock and on the nearby beach. Just past the north end of the park are the famous La Jolla Caves, which have been cut deeply into the sandstone cliffs by the action of the waves over the years. During an extremely low tide, one can take a tour of the caves by kayak.
La Jolla Shores, home to the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club and the ocean-front Marine Room Restaurant, is just north of the Village. It has a large park and a wonderful beach, which is great for swimming, surfing, walking, sunning, and just playing in the sand. Kayak lessons and tours are available, using the sit-on-top type of kayaks, which are great fun and are very user-friendly. At the north end of the beach is the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The Shores has a grocery, convenience store, shops and a variety of restaurants, most with outdoor seating.
The arts play a very important part in the La Jolla lifestyle. The famous La Jolla Playhouse on the campus of UCSD has three venues and presents a very high quality of theater. Several plays and musicals that originated there have gone directly to Broadway and have won "Tony" awards. The La Jolla Music Society, which presents classical music concerts, The Museum of Contemporary Art, which presents various exhibits, concerts and films, and The Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, which presents a series of jazz concerts, are supported by people from all over San Diego County. The free "Concerts in the Park" series at Scripps Park on the ocean is always a big hit with locals and visitors alike.
Housing in La Jolla is quite varied, from the very large, elegant mansions of La Jolla Farms, the dramatic homes perched on the side of Mt. Soledad, the ocean-front homes in La Jolla Shores, the charming Beach Cottages in The Village, the beautiful, lushly landscaped homes in The Beach Barber Tract and Bird Rock, to
the Mediterranean or Contemporary townhomes and condominiums that are sprinkled throughout the area.
Schools, both public and private, are very highly ranked. La Jolla Country Day School and The Bishops School are both fine preparatory schools. Institutes of higher education abound; most notably, The University of California San Diego, with Scripps Institute of Oceanography, a Medical School, and a Supercomputer Center, and National University. The MBA program of California State University San Marcos is taught entirely at their facility in nearby Sorrento Valley. Several research institutes, including the world-renown Scripps Institute and the Salk Institute are nearby. Torrey Pines Science Park is home to several biomedical research labs.
The coming of sunset brings many residents and visitors to the beach and the ocean-front parks. They sit or stroll and watch as the day comes to a close. The sun dips into the ocean, turning the water and the clouds to glorious shades of peach, pink and gold. It is truly a wonderful place to be.
