La Mesa Real Estate
La Mesa is located east of San Diego just off of the I-8 freeway. The
area
was originally a part of the Mission San Diego de Alcala. In the year
1821
the land was granted as a rancho to a gentleman by the name of Santiago
Arguello. 4,000 acres of the rancho were sold to Robert Allison in
1868.
Allison's ranch and rest stop were named Allison Springs. When water
and
rail transit arrived in the San Diego area, Allison Springs boomed.
In 1894, A.S. Crowder along with Robert Allison filed a map of the La
Mesa
subdivision. Ed Fletcher and William Gross established an artist's
community on the east side of town, which sparked growth. The area of
Grossmont was named for William Gross. It was a new mountain
residential
area and was home to some famous performers as well as the author of
"The
Virginian", Owen Wister. Mount Helix was developed in the mid 1920's
as
both an avocado growing region and residential area.
La Mesa had lemon groves around the town as well as a lemon packing
house.
In 1906, the downtown area began to take shape and prosper due in part
to
the 100 acre land purchase by Sherman C. Grable.
The city of La Mesa had only 700 residents when it incorporated in the
year
1912. Today, the area is home to 60,000+ residents that live among its
rolling hills which offer gorgeous views. Grossmont Center is a major
regional shopping mall which offers anchor stores Wal-Mart, Target and
Macy's as well as theaters and restaurants. The La Mesa Springs
shopping
center near downtown offers more neighborhood goods and services.
