The community of Linda Vista is named for the Spanish words meaning
"beautiful view". USD, the University of San Diego a prestigious
Catholic
university, rests atop one of the area's highest hills and looks
similar in
design to one of the missions that are located throughout the county.
This
centrally located community overlooks Mission Valley to the south,
Mission
Bay to the west. Tecolote Canyon is on its northwest border.
The area offers residents both ocean and city views.
Linda Vista was originally an olive grove which came to life in 1940 as
part
of a government project to house families of aircraft workers. The
creation
of the community was the result of the lobbying efforts of the
Consolidated
Aircraft Corporation and its CEO at the time, Rueben H. Fleet. Their
lobbying efforts resulted in the construction of the additional housing
that
was required to accommodate the large numbers of aircraft workers that
were
coming to San Diego to construct the necessary aircraft needed for the
war
effort.
3,000 homes went up very quickly. So quickly, that a proper
infrastructure
was not even in place to help support the new residents. Linda Vista
was
the first neighborhood to be built to the northern limits of the city.
There
was only one steep road in place; too steep for even a school bus to
climb!
There area's lone grocery store was so overcrowded that residents
recall
having to wait in line for over an hour to purchase food.
Today the area has a well-established infrastructure with ample roads
and
shopping. While many of the original houses remain, the neighborhood
offers
a wide range of housing options which include apartments, condominiums
and
single family residences.
