the southern border of Camp Pendleton Marine base. The city was built
around the San Luis Rey de Francia Mission which was founded in the
year
1798. Oceanside was incorporated in 1888.
Oceanside is a lively beach community which features a 1,000 slip

over three miles of beaches. Restaurants, shops and a lighthouse
surround
the harbor area. Popular activities of the area include sport fishing,
boating and seasonal whale watching. Buena Vista lagoon is a wetlands
preserve and features a nature interpretive center which hosts special
events throughout the year. Oceanside's 1900-ft pier was first built

Oceanside offers five golf courses.
Camp Pendleton serves as the largest Marine base in the United States.
It
was originally two separate areas - Rancho Margarita and Los Flores,
and was
purchased by the Navy in 1942. Oceanside experienced rapid growth with
the
opening of the base and had grow at a rapid pace ever since.
The city serves as a transportation hub for the surrounding north
coastal
communities. Weekday and Saturday commuter trains on the San Diego
County
Coaster line provide service to and from downtown San Diego. The Los
Angeles commuter rail line Metrolink provides service between Oceanside
and
Orange County and the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Oceanside is also
a
mainline stop for daily Amtrak Pacific Surfliner service. The
Sprinter, the
inland corridor light rail project will soon utilize Oceanside as its
western terminus offering service to Escondido.
Interstate 5 bisects the city. Two additional freeways SR-76 and SR-78
connect up with I-15 inland.
