Pacific Beach Real Estate - 92109
Let's go to the beach! Better yet, let's LIVE at the beach!
Developers always seem to know a good thing when they see it, and they began creating Pacific Beach in 1886. Existing farmed fields were bought and converted to residential and commercial lots which were auctioned off. Apparently many people were anxious to own a piece of the much-touted "Southern California Paradise".
"PB" as it is often called is just south of La Jolla, and is bound by Interstate 5 to the east. Mission Beach lies to the south and, best of all, the Pacific Ocean is its western boundary. It is very convenient to downtown, Mission Valley and the airport. While it is a neighborhood of San Diego, Pacific Beach is MUCH more laid-back. Shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops are the typical mode of dress.
It's easy to find one's way around, as PB is laid out in a grid pattern with the streets pretty much running north/south and east/west. Mission Boulevard is the main drag that runs parallel to the ocean. Shops, fast food and a variety of restaurants line the street. The other north/south streets carry the names of early government officials and run eastward in alphabetical order starting with "Bayard". Gemstones name the streets that run east/west and are more-or-less in alphabetical order starting with "Agate" at the north end of the community.
The magnificent beach runs from the inlet at south Mission Beach to La Jolla, and is edged by a wide sidewalk (called the Boardwalk) which is filled with people of all ages, walking, skating, or riding their beach-cruiser bikes. It provides some of the absolute BEST people-watching anywhere!
Pacific Beach embraces a large part of Mission Bay, and there are beach areas and wide sidewalks that follow the shore. One can take lessons in sailing, kayaking and sail boarding at the Sports Center.
Other attractions are the shops, fast-food places, a good assortment of restaurants and friendly bars that line the main east/west street, Garnet (emphasis on the "net"....it's a local thing). There is a very active night life, especially on Friday and Saturday nights.
Pacific Beach has a variety of housing including apartments, condos, older California style beach cottages, Spanish and contemporary style town homes, large oceanfront homes and detached homes that cling to the foothills that border La Jolla and often have spectacular views.
