Rancho Bernardo Real Estate
Rancho Bernardo is located about 10 minutes from the San Diego airport,
just
off the I-15 corridor. The area is part of the city of San Diego, and
is
actually a grouping of planned neighborhoods and shopping. It is
commonly
referred to as "RB" by locals and offers its own unique ambience and
features.
The first residents of the area were Indian bands who left evidence
behind
of their daily lives in the hollows that they used to grind corn and
acorns.
One can still see the trail they walked on which led then to the ocean.
The
conquistadors followed. They came in search of riches and the padres
who
cultivated grapes and cattle in the hills and valleys. The King of
Spain
made the original land grant in 1789, and dubbed the land "La Canada de
San
Bernardo. It was for a total of 17,763 acres of land. The name Rancho
Bernardo probably comes from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a priest who led
the
Second Crusade.
The area of Bernardo can be seen on maps as early as the year 1800.
Captain
Joseph Snook, an English seafarer who settled in California and became
known
as Don Jose Francisco Snook. Snook's property was the site of the
Battle of
San Pasqual. Pio Pico's troops ambushed General Kearny's troops on the
site
as Kearny's troops retreated south towards San Diego. The American
troops
were held down for three days and were rescued when Kit Carson arrived
in
San Diego.
The village of Bernardo was served by the Butterfield Stage Coach and
served
as a stopping point along the San Diego to Escondido route. The area
that
is now known as Rancho Bernardo has been associated with several
prominent
San Diego residents-Col. Ed Fletcher, James McCoy, William Henshaw and
Donald and Lawrence Daley.
Donald and Lawrence Daly formed Rancho Bernardo, Inc. in 1961; several
years
after that they sold the property to AVCO Community Developers. The
developed and planned communities of Rancho Bernardo were created by
AVCO.
Rancho Bernardo features residential areas, shopping, light industry,
clubs
and golf courses and greenbelts.
